Intro to Course and Student Handbook

Kick-start the programme by welcoming pupils to the Journalist Training School!

This is the students’ opportunity to write or to create news about subjects which they are passionate about.

The Student Handbook is available to download on the right hand side of this page. Guide the class through the various sections of the student handbook explaining that they will learn how to create their own newspaper, write a sports report, opinion piece, feature article, and how to create a podcast or powerful photojournalism image.

Learning Activity

Encourage the students to read the winning pieces of student journalism which are included in the handbook and available to view on the Young Journalist Ireland website.

If there is time, distribute newspapers or allow students to access digital news on their tablets.

Ask them to choose their favourite sections and to explain why they are drawn to particular stories or images. What makes them stand out?
